Common Household Skin Irritants That Can Irritate Your Baby

Common Household Skin Irritants That Can Irritate Your Baby

29th Jan 2018

Moms and dads have enough to worry about when a little one arrives. They shouldn’t have to add diaper rash, eczema, red and dry skin to the list of worries, should they? Sadly, a baby’s skin is highly sensitive and requires extra care after a day of parenting. Common skin irritants can be found throughout the home and in everyday life, sometimes hidden in products we use on ourselves daily. With a little knowledge of common irritants, you can help shield your baby’s skin from rashes, itchy patches and more.

Soaps Can be a Common Culprit of Skin Irritations

Triclosan, an ingredient found in some antibacterial soaps, has been linked to cause dermatitis rash to sensitive skin. Soaps made with sodium laurel sulfate and fragrances are also best avoided, due to drying out baby’s skin and causing irritation. Look for natural, pH-neutral, nonsoap cleansers for bathing or washing.

Sunscreen May Not Be Safe for Baby

It’s never safe to skip the sunscreen, but it is important to choose the right sunscreen for your baby. Some SPF products contain organic compounds such as oxybenzone and para-amniobenzoic acid, which cause allergies in sensitive skin. Look for sensitive, broad spectrum sunscreen for kids to shy away from rashes and bumps.

Detergents are Packed with Harmful Ingredients

Laundry detergents are usually packed with perfumes and dyes, which can cause red, scaly rashes on babies. Not only do parents need to worry about washing baby’s clothes and blankets, but also be aware of the clothes they are wearing while holding baby. Choose fragrance free detergent and run a double rinse to be safe.

Lotion Can Trigger Eczema and Rashes on Baby’s Sensitive Skin

Lotions may contain all types of harmful ingredients for baby, including fragrance, phthalates and parabens. These can trigger eczema, peeling, redness and more. Look for a soothing moisturizer made with ingredients such as aloe, allantoin and avocado for healing and moisture, such as TriDerma’s Daily Soothing Moisturizer™ for Baby. For eczema, TriDerma offers a Eczema Itch & Dryness™ Fast Healing Cream for concentrated botanical healing to baby’s red and irritated skin.

Baby Wipes Should be Used Less Frequently

Did you know that baby wipes can contain irritants such as alcohol, fragrances and preservatives? For some babies, baby wipes can cause oozing, crusty and itchy skin. Use wipes less often, and try to use cotton washcloths as an alternative. But, don’t forget about the detergent trick, above! For an even gentler cleansing, try TriDerma’s Aloe Cleansing Gel™. This waterless gel provides a natural germ fighter to help clean sticky fingers, faces and bottoms.

As Always TriDerma Products Are Safe for Babies

As always, we recommend looking for products made using gentle, natural and botanical based healing ingredients, for you and for baby. Recommended by pediatricians and parents, TriDerma’s baby care line has no negative side effects and leaves baby’s skin soft, smooth and nourished.
