A Fair Skinned Girl’s Guide to Skincare By: How to be a Redhead

7th Jul 2017

The summer is shining and fair skin is freckling.

If you’re like our redhead founders, Adrienne and Stephanie Vendetti, you have extremely sensitive skin. For those who have this skin type (blondes and brunettes included), you know you can be prone to easy breakouts and always seems to get sunburnt — when you have only been outside for five minutes.

It’s extremely important to protect, care and treat your skin with love. Here are our top five tips for giving your skin some TLC this summer.

1. Rock Facial Oils

Don’t be afraid of oils, even if you have oily skin. Giving your skin extra, beneficial oils will actually make it less oily. *Mind blown*. We’ve been using oils for years and notice the difference right away. Once you apply a few drops to the skin (morning and night), it hydrates it and adds a lasting, glowing residue. Oils can help clear noticeable pores, reduce skin issues such as eczema and rosacea, and act as a quenching moisturizer.

2. Moisturize Daily

Find a chemical-free, gentle face/body lotion for sensitive skin. We recommend moisturizing immediately (we have a 15 second rule) after cleansing and applying oils. It’s an essential part of our skincare regimen simply because it keeps our skin extra hydrated. No one likes that tight feeling on the cheekbones after showering or cleansing — that’s your skin’s way of saying, “I’m thirsty!” Plus, moisturizers are known to fight wrinkles, make your skin look and hide any blemishes that may come your way.

3. Never Forget Sunscreen

This is a no brainer and something we preach daily on HowtobeaRedhead.com. According to the National Institutes of Health, redheads are 10 to 100 times more likely to develop melanoma. Wear sunscreen daily (on your face and body), reapply every two hours and seek shade when possible. We also recommend finding an SPF facial moisturizer and mineral foundation for extra protection.

4. Gently Exfoliate

We like to exfoliate our skin 1-2 times a week to remove the dead skin on the skin’s surface. It even helps with clogged pores and blemishes. Be extra gentle during this process. You don’t want to leave your skin more irritated. Find an exfoliator you trust and apply it in soft circular motions on your face. Rinse and feel the difference.

5. Mask Weekly

This is something we do weekly (maybe even twice a week) if our skin is really calling for it. There are so many masks on the market that target a certain treatment – revitalize, hydrate, restore, refresh, awaken. It’s a great way to pamper your skin, remove excess oils and help with any impurities. Remember: After maskin’, grab a washcloth (not needed if you’re using a sheet mask) and rinse with cool water.

And, most importantly, always rock your skin!
