Living with rosacea can be a struggle. Not knowing when the next flare-up will occur or how to deal with the symptoms can be stressful. We want to help and share with you 5 skin care tips from our experts that could help in dealing with this chronic skin disorder.
Use Gentle Face Products
If you have rosacea, then having a gentle skin-care routine is a must. Look for a mild cleanser and moisturizer that is designed for sensitive skin and avoid ingredients like alcohol, witch hazel, menthol and eucalyptus oil that can dry out your skin. After cleansing your face, gently pat dry and avoid rough washcloths that could irritate the skin. Always remember to be very gentle to minimize irritation. Apply your moisturizer only after your face is completely dry to avoid any unwanted burning sensations.
Use a Broad Spectrum SPF Sunscreen
Sun exposure is known as a common trigger for rosacea and therefore it’s vital to use a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. A broad spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays so you will be completely covered. Make sure to reapply throughout the day and not forgo on the cloudy days. The sun’s rays can penetrate through the clouds, so make it a rule to use sunscreen every single day.
Use Makeup to Reduce the Appearance of Rosacea
If you choose to wear makeup, it can be a great tool to help improve your appearance and conceal the imperfections. When choosing which makeup to use you might want to opt for green-tinted products to cancel out the red.
Use a light touch when applying foundation and be even more gentle when applying eye makeup. Avoid using sponges which can be too harsh on skin and instead use a brush. Remember to clean your brushes between uses. The mascara and eyeliner you choose should be easy to apply and remove. You want to avoid rubbing your eyes and applying to much pressure at the end of the day while you try to remove it.
Always Do a Patch Test with New Products
Before trying a new skin care product on your face, make sure to do a patch test. Try a small amount of product on a small patch of skin. We recommend doing it on the area where you are the most sensitive. This will vary from person to person, but some common areas include the the nose, the chin and the neck. Leave the product on for 24 hours and if no irritation occurs you are good to use the product. Don’t be afraid to try new products and be patient because it could take a while to find the perfect product for you.
Keep Track of Rosacea Flare-ups
One of the best tips is to keep a journal and jot down every time you experience a rosacea flare-up. This will help you figure out what your specific triggers are. Once you can identify those triggers you can do your best to avoid them. Know that you are not alone and rosacea does not define you.
