Understanding The Difference Between Spider Veins and Varicose Veins

28th Dec 2017

Although many people think spider veins and varicose veins are the same, the two conditions are actually quite different from one another. It’s estimated that about 50% of women suffer from some type of vein problem. At TriDerma, we’re here to clear up the confusion about each condition and provide a solution for those pesky veins!

Spider Veins vs. Varicose Veins

Spider veins are much smaller than varicose veins, and can be caused by the backup of blood, hormone changes, sun exposure and injuries. The term ‘spider vein’ became popular because the veins tend to look like tree branches or spider webs with their short, jagged lines. Spider veins are usually painless, unlike varicose veins, which can be very painful. Those large, swollen blood vessels that protrude from the skin and are typically blue, red or flesh-colored are varicose veins. When blood is not being distributed correctly in the body due to weak or damaged valves in the veins, it will pool up and stretch out the veins, causing pain.

Causes and Misconceptions of Spider and Varicose Veins

The causes of spider and varicose veins can be linked to genetics, activity level, hormonal influences and obesity. If your parents have spider or varicose veins, it’s more likely that you will too. Working in a profession that requires a lot of standing, such as nursing or teaching, also increases your risk for these vein conditions. There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to what causes spider and varicose veins. One of the most common myths is that wearing high heels and crossing your legs while you sit does not cause vein issues. Others include the belief that you can’t do anything to treat varicose veins, only older people develop spider veins and that surgery is the only option to treat either vein condition.

What to Do About It

First and foremost, take care of your skin and body! Wearing sunscreen is essential to eliminating spider veins from appearing on your face. Regular exercise improves vein strength and circulation, which helps combat painful varicose veins. If your varicose veins are causing pain, compression socks are a great option to provide some relief.

The good news is that you are not alone! Luckily, at TriDerma, we have a Vein Defense Healing Cream as a natural alternative to those expensive laser treatments. The cream includes eight times more active natural botanicals to help diminish the appearance of varicose veins, spider veins, red blotches, under eye dark circles and broken capillaries for healthier and younger looking skin.
