5 Tips on How to Care for Your Dog’s Skin

29th Aug 2018

Dogs really are a (wo)man’s best friend. As a dog owner, you would do anything to keep your pup happy and healthy. And just like our own skin, a dog’s skin can be a reflection of their overall health. That’s why on this week’s blog, TriDerma is highlighting five tips on how to care for and protect your dog’s skin.

1. Healthy Diet, Healthy Skin

Maintaining healthy skin and a shiny coat starts on the inside. Your pup’s coat is composed almost entirely of protein, which is why it’s crucial to make sure your dog’s diet contains appropriate protein quantity and quality for their age and activity level. Plus, a healthy dog is a happy dog!

2. Find the Bathing Sweet Spot

We all know that bathing your pup is an integral part of maintaining their overall hygienic health, but did you know that bathing too often can cause severe skin issues? Irritated skin, damaged hair follicles and increased risk of infection are all examples of potential side effects of over-bathing. Every dog is different, so be sure to consult your veterinarian for expert guidance on what’s best for your specific dog.

3. Beware of Common Household Irritants

Many of the products you use every day around the house can cause serious irritation to your dog’s skin and paws. For example, de-icing salts used to melt snow and ice, are paw irritants and can also be poisonous if licked off. With summer wrapping up and colder weather approaching, make sure to wash and dry your pup’s paws as soon as they come in from the snow this winter. Other common household irritants include laundry detergent, plant fertilizer, and air fresheners.

4. Brush Your Dog’s Coat Often

In addition to preventing matting and shedding, regularly brushing your dog’s coat helps promote distribution of the natural oils on their skin. Stimulating the hair follicles increases the natural production of oils, making the coat shiny and smooth. For the healthiest skin possible, you should try to brush your pup once, every other day.

5. Protect Your Dog’s Paws with TriDerma’s Intense Fast Healing Cream
